The role of the physiotherapist in women’s health is increasingly recognized. Preparing pregnant women for childbirth, the birth process itself, and the postpartum period are all within the physiotherapist’s scope of practice.
In terms of prevention, the physiotherapist designs exercise programs tailored to pregnant women, including breathing and birth preparation exercises. Treatments can be individual, or group based. Postpartum, issues such as abdominal muscle diastasis or urinary incontinence may arise, and physiotherapists can help alleviate and resolve these problems through specific techniques and methods.
Advisory work regarding newborn care is also an essential part of the physiotherapist’s role in working with this population.
